ALCOHOL/DRUG SUBSTANCE ABUSE COURSE (ADSAC)

The Oklahoma Alcohol/Drug Substance Abuse Course (ADSAC) is a program collaboratively managed by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) and the Association of DUI Program Administrators of Oklahoma (ADAO) that is required of all DUI and other convicted drug offenders.

The ADSAC mission is to promote public safety by reducing the occurrence of substance abuse and related high-risk behavior. It assists participants to identify how their substance use puts them and others at risk and it guides them to build a plan for change. The course encourages responsible decision-making by providing participants with accurate information, use of Interactive Journaling ® and the application of the Stages of Change and Motivational Enhancement research.

There are two different levels of the ADSAC curriculum. The Level I course is a 10-hour program required for offenders who are assessed to have a low to moderate level of need based upon the state assessment system. The Level II course is a 24-hour program required of offenders who are assessed to have a more serious level of need based upon the state assessment system. The Level II course involves more intensive content while the Level I course focuses primarily on education and behavior change strategies.

After nearly a year of collaborative development work to update, improve and standardize the course curriculum, ODMHSAS, ADAO and The Change Companies ® implemented the Level I and Level II standardized ADSAC programs in July of 2003.

All participants who complete the courses also complete a standardized pre/post-test, which measures knowledge and attitude/behavior change as well as a course evaluation. Outcome data from those instruments gives instructors, policy makers and course developers important information for ongoing program improvement.
